Coping mechanisms

Introduction

Throughout my high school years, I faced numerous challenges, including divorce, anorexia nervosa, depression, and generalized anxiety disorder. However, I refused to let these obstacles defeat me. Instead, I learned to embrace them as opportunities for growth and resilience. Rather than allowing them to knock me down, I chose to absorb the punches and use them as motivation to improve myself.

My Struggle With Anorexia

In the past, I used to starve myself to cope with body dysmorphia and external pressures. I called it my “spiky blanket” because it provided false comfort. However, I reached a breaking point and realized I needed to increase my food intake for muscle and health. Initially terrified, I only consumed around 700 calories. Now, I consume about 1800 calories and maintain my fitness while gaining muscle. With therapy, I pushed myself towards improvement. It was a terrifying journey, but I realized I was okay again. Recovery is rewarding, despite ongoing struggles. There may be doubt or temptation, but this is where I need to be.

Positive Coping Suggestions

Whenever I find myself yearning to indulge in my old destructive habits, I turn to the enlightening pages of Atomic Habits by James Clear. In this remarkable book, Clear suggests a powerful strategy to overcome bad habits – replacing them with healthier alternatives. To help you on your journey, here are a few of my cherished coping mechanisms that have proven effective.

  • Spending time with the lord.
  • Taking a  walk outdoors.
  • Doing my hair
  • Grooming my nails
  • Reading
  • Listening to people speak of self improvement
  • Talking to my therapist
  • Jiu-Jitsu
  • Cooking for family
  • Researching and acting out self improvement

Conclusion

Among all the activities, the ones that are most important to me are spending time connecting with the Lord, listening to insightful podcasts, and practicing Jiu-Jitsu. I find great value in podcasts featuring speakers like Sadie Robertson Huff, Andrew Huberman, and Natacha Oceane. If any of these interests you or if you would like me to provide more information about these aspects or my previous habits, please feel free to leave a comment. I sincerely hope this information is helpful to someone. Thank you for taking the time to read!
